The ambitious Aragonese Technology District (DAT) Alierta project has reached a critical administrative milestone this week. Engineering firm IDOM has formally delivered the General Interest Plan of Aragón (PIGA) Project to the Aragonese Institute for Development (IAF), the document that will serve as the legal and urban planning roadmap to transform northern Zaragoza into a leading European digital hub.

With this step, the IAF now takes the lead in the administrative process that will soon allow the first cranes to rise across 82 hectares next to the Río Ebro Campus.

A €236.9 Million Project in Three Phases

The scale of DAT Alierta is measured not only in square meters but also in a total investment reaching €236.9 million. The execution plan has been carefully designed to ensure that activity continues while administrative procedures advance:

• Phase 1 (Immediate): Projects already aligned with current planning regulations that can begin without waiting for the new plan.
• Phase 2 (Simultaneous): PIGA-linked projects that allow construction to proceed while final approval is granted.
• Phase 3 (Consolidation): Final developments once the PIGA is fully in force.

This structure distributes investment into two major financial blocks:
€70.6 million for the initial phase and €166.3 million for the park’s maturity stage.

Why Is PIGA Approval So Important?

The PIGA is the instrument that grants the “green light” to Aragón’s modernization. By being declared of general interest, procedures are accelerated and the creation of new plots and licenses is facilitated. This is essential to attract strategic projects such as the recently announced ultra-fast Espanix internet node, which requires €55 million in infrastructure and 4 MW of electrical power.

An 82-Hectare Ecosystem Already Underway

Unlike other technology parks built from scratch, DAT Alierta has a head start:

• 30 hectares already operational: The district leverages existing facilities in the Actur area, giving it real and functional activity from day one.
• Strategic location: Positioned between city and nature, offering full connectivity to downtown Zaragoza via tram and to major interurban transport routes.

The “Magnet Effect” for Talent and Business

The Government of Aragón’s objective is clear: diversify the productive model. With the delivery of the project by IDOM, the foundations are now in place for AI, cybersecurity, defense, and telemedicine companies to find their ideal headquarters in Zaragoza.

The proximity to the University of Zaragoza is no coincidence. The aim is to create full synergy between the academic talent of the Río Ebro Campus and the technological companies that will establish themselves within DAT’s plots.
